Report on the performance of Cyprus Shami Goats Imported To Malaysia Since November 1 2009

Cyprus Shami Goats have been living in Malaysian farms for the last six month since November 1 2009.We have experienced to no casualty on arrival to the quarrantine period at a farm in Kota Negeri Sembilan. Mortality after six month is less than 8 % due to various reasons.Currently no further casualty has been reported by the farms.

At a farm in Chembong 100 does gave birth to 180 kids during the month of march to april 2010.Birth weight ranges from 3.5 to 4 kg each. Some are triplet and most are single or twin. One doe gave birth to six kids and five of them survived.

A research farm indicated that the fastest growth among the kids is 9 kg in a month for a kid that was born at 4 kg. weight. (that is 300 gms/day). Mostly the kids grow at a rate between 200-300 gms per day

For milk production a farm reported a milking rate of 2.5- 3 kg per goat per day for does after second pregnancy. Milk production target is an average of about 4 kg. per day per goat after a experiencing few pregnancies.

Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development (MARDI) is planning to do confirmation research and field trial on Cyprus Shami Goat within this year.

Cyprus Shami Goats with its special charateristics as DUAL PURPOSE GOAT is finally going to be recognised as a valuable breed that will contribute greatly towards the development of the Malaysian Meat and dairy goat industry. Farmers using this breed shall experienced better viability and sustainability in their goat farming business simply because they have the milk production that will give them constant cashflow (revenue from goat milk is six time higher than meat in Malaysia).
